Cold-pressed virgin hemp seed oil is mechanically pressed from hemp seeds without chemical extraction or refining. The result is a green, nutty-flavoured oil with a low smoke point (approximately 165 degrees Celsius), short shelf life, and a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids. It is a food and cosmetic ingredient, not a cannabinoid product.
How cold-pressed hemp oil is produced
Whole hemp seed is fed into a mechanical screw press at controlled temperature (below 50 degrees Celsius for true cold pressing). The press extracts the oil from the seed kernel while leaving the protein and fibre as a solid cake (which becomes hemp flour and hemp protein powder). The oil is filtered to remove solid particles, then bottled. No solvents, heat refining, or chemical processing is involved.
Visual and sensory characteristics
Cold-pressed hemp seed oil is green to olive-green in colour, with the depth of green reflecting cultivar and pressing temperature. The aroma is grassy and nutty. The flavour is similar to a soft pumpkin seed oil or a strong walnut oil. Used in dressings or finishing applications, the oil contributes a distinct hemp character.
Fatty acid composition
| Component | Approximate % |
|---|---|
| Linoleic acid (LA, omega-6) | 55% |
| Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, omega-3) | 17% |
| Oleic acid (omega-9) | 11% |
| Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, omega-6) | 3% |
| Stearidonic acid (omega-3) | 1% |
| Saturated fatty acids (palmitic, stearic) | 9% |
| Other | ~4% |
The combined omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is approximately 3:1.
Why it is not CBD oil
Hemp seed oil is pressed from seeds. CBD oil is extracted (typically with CO2 or ethanol) from the flowering parts of the hemp plant. Hemp seeds contain only trace cannabinoids (less than 25 micrograms per millilitre), well below any pharmacological threshold. CBD oil contains tens to thousands of milligrams of cannabidiol per millilitre. The two products are distinct in source, regulation, and use.
Storage requirements
Cold-pressed hemp oil is highly perishable. The polyunsaturated fats oxidise quickly when exposed to heat, light, and air. Practical storage:
- Refrigerate after opening, always.
- Use within 60 to 90 days of opening for best flavour.
- Store in dark glass or opaque containers.
- Keep away from heat sources (stove, oven, sunny windows).
A rancid bottle is the most common reason consumers conclude they "do not like hemp oil"; the issue is usually storage rather than the product.
