Hemp seed oil is recommended endlessly online for eczema and dry skin. The evidence behind that advice is thinner than the enthusiasm but not empty: there is a plausible mechanism, one often-cited dietary trial, and a sensible way to test it on your own skin without wasting money.
The mechanism that makes it plausible
Dry, itchy skin involves a compromised lipid barrier. Hemp seed oil is unusually rich in linoleic acid and supplies GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), both of which are structural players in skin barrier lipids. Low linoleic acid in skin surface lipids is a documented feature of some dry-skin conditions, which is why barrier-supporting oils are a reasonable hypothesis rather than pure marketing.
What has actually been studied
The study everyone quotes is a small randomized crossover trial in which participants with atopic dermatitis consumed hemp seed oil daily for several weeks. Reported outcomes included reduced skin dryness and itchiness and less use of topical medication. It was small, single-site, and dietary (drinking the oil, not rubbing it on), so it is evidence of promise, not proof. Topical use has less formal study behind it; what exists, plus long cosmetic experience, mainly supports hemp oil as a well-tolerated emollient that does not clog pores for most users.
An honest way to try it
- Topically: patch test inside the forearm for a few days, then apply to damp skin once daily on a limited area for two to three weeks. Judge by feel and by photographs, not memory.
- Dietary: one to two tablespoons of cold-pressed oil daily, used in dressings rather than heated, for a month. This is also simply food; the downside risk is calories.
- Keep treating: hemp oil is a supportive emollient, not a replacement for prescribed eczema treatment. Flares that need medication still need medication.
What to buy for skin
The same oil you would buy for salads: cold-pressed, unrefined, dark bottle, recent date, refrigerated after opening. Rancid oil is bad food and worse skincare. Storage rules are covered in how to store hemp seed oil, and the skincare basics in the skincare primer.
